Provides quality assurance by proofreading accessible instructional materials in Braille format and Nemeth code; verifies proof copies of Braille transcription against original scripts to detect grammatical, typographical, or compositional errors and marks proofs for correction; verifies Braille documents are formatted correctly; collaborates with Braille textbook transcribers in the production of accessible instructional materials; consults reference books to check references to rules of grammar and composition; marks proof with Braille stylus or pencil to correct errors, using standard printers= marks; performs other duties as assigned.
Skills / Requirements
Must have a keen understanding of Literary Braille and English grammar; must know Nemeth code; must be detail oriented; have knowledge of research methods, techniques and/or sources of information. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form; learn and use automated computer software programs; operate scanning and text-to speech programs and related equipment; establish, organize and/or maintain files; review and/or edit documents for accuracy and completeness; read and interpret tactile graphics and read and understand instructional materials in a variety of curriculum areas, including language arts, math, and science on instructional levels from K - 12; work within a structured setting; work independently and with assistant and manage time effectively. Preference will be given to Braille Proofreaders certified through the Library of Congress. Preference will be given to qualified deaf/hard-of-hearing and/or blind/visually impaired candidates. Successful completion of criminal background check is required for this position.

State of Utah Step 40, $15.64 per hour for Braille Proofreader certified through the Library of Congress. Would be willing to hire someone without certification at a lower hourly rate. Certification must be obtained from the Library of Congress within one year from date of hire in order to be considered for continued employment. This position is eligible for full benefits including medical, dental, life insurance, long term disability insurance, 1.5% employer contribution to 401(k), annual and sick leave, holiday pay, pension, and other valuable benefits. The State requires employees to receive their pay through Direct Deposit or EPPICard.
