General Function:

Learns to provide referral testing service to ARUP clients by selecting vendors, sending samples, and entering test results. Also learns to provide information and assistance to clients, technical sections, Client Services, Medical Directors, Marketing and Exception Handing as needed. Works under direct supervision to learn the essential processes and accountabilities of Referral Testing.

Reporting Function:

This position reports to the Supervisor, Lead and/or Support Services Group Manager.

Representative Activities and Accountabilities:

1. Receives and initiates telephone calls from/to clients/referral laboratories. During calls:

* Provides specimen requirements, sample stabilities, turn around times, reference ranges, CPT codes, prices, NY/FLA regulatory matters and direct submission requests.

* Provides information to the Supervisor, Lead or Group Manager regarding referral laboratories test methodology changes, reference interval changes or any other communication.

* Provides general problem resolution and appropriate follow-up to clients and vendors as necessary.

2. Documents all telephone calls and issues in Call Logging.

3. Knows test requesting in PathNet and ESP, labeling, specimen storage and retrieval and how to process samples for send out to the appropriate vendor.

4. Understands PathNet result entry and all associated test result templates and demonstrates accuracy in data entry.

5. Complies with patient confidentiality and information security policies and procedures.

6. Knows ANSR, ESP Inquiry, ESP RACS, ESP Checkout, IMS, Call Logging, On line User's Guide and the Access Vendor Database.

7. Knows basic laboratory and medical terminology.


Other Duties and Accountabilities:

1. Is flexible and demonstrates adaptability by embracing changes in section structure with a positive attitude.

2. Maintains a clean and orderly work area. Cleans bench surface and equipment each shift or after contamination or spills.

3. Knows the section Quality Assurance program and understands its content.

4. Attends staff meetings and inservices to assure job competency and communication within ARUP.

5. Participates in on-going training related to job functions and completes all mandatory section and corporate training.

6. Solves problems and takes recommended action. Errors or negligence may lead to serious consequences for patients or disrupt the operation of the group.

7. Demonstrates professional demeanor in personal appearance and behavior in all work-related interactions inside and outside of the laboratory.

8. The Referral Testing department functions as a team and all staff members support each other and maintain open and effective communication with each other and with others throughout the organization.

9. Other duties as assigned. Management retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time.

Job Qualifications

Education/Credentials required:


Education required: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Education/Credentials preferred:

Education preferred: Typing or performing keyboard entry at 35 wpm or more, 10 key helpful.


Experience Required:


One year of customer problem solving work experience required.

* Ability to work all required overtime.

* Fine motor coordination.

* Excellent verbal and oral communication skills in English.

* Good visual acuity including color perception.

* Occasional light lifting.
