Jobing Description
Location: UT-Salt Lake City
Facility: Primary Children%27s Med

The Behavioral Health Specialist I will provide efficient and therapeutically effective care of children and adolescents through a coordinated multi-disciplinary treatment team program. Will teach skills of daily living; provide a safe environment and immediate feedback to patients in order to reach treatment goals.


Essential Duties:

Maintain a safe, consistent supportive milieu by providing care in accordance with the multidisciplinary treatment plan and established behavioral program interventions and programs to meet patient care needs

Communicate pertinent patient information in shift report and to the treatment team using effective communication and organization skills to ensure consistent care among staff

Implement individual patient programs using knowledge of behavioral interventions including level system, time out and seclusion and specialized programs to provide consistent patient care

Complete timely and accurate documentation on all patient care forms

Recognize critical situations and identify options to manage crisis using sound judgment and problem solving skills to prevent escalation of the situation or injury to client/staff

Administer medications using safest and best practice standards

Educate patients and families on treatment issues and behavioral interventions using knowledge of behavioral health treatment and program to ensure patients/family receive all pertinent information to improve outcomes.Plan and teach various Activity of Daily Living (ADL), skill-building groups and activities to achieve treatment goals


Skills / Requirements

Minimum Requirements:


High school graduate with two years work experience in a psychiatric setting, or a Bachelors Degree in a Social Science field


Course work or work experience in pediatric psychiatric and/or chemical dependency treatment


Knowledge and experience in child development issues


Effective communication and interpersonal skills


Basic Life Support (BS) Certification or willing to obtain within 90 days of hire


Food Handler's Permit or willing to obtain upon hire


MANDT certification required after 90 days of hire



Physical Requirements:


This position involves considerable standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting and turning. It may require transferring patients and restraining patients if needed. May involve pushing or lifting weight in excess of 50 pounds. It requires visual and auditory acuity at a level to provide safe and effective care in a pediatric hospital setting.
