Position Purpose:

The Cancer Registrar II is responsible for timely and accurate abstracting, coding, and lifetime follow-up of all cancer patient information according to strict protocol requirements. Certified Tumor Registrars (CTR) develop, sustain, and report cancer registry data for research, quality control, facility planning and marketing, and state and national agencies.


Essential Functions:

1. Proficient in all the 'Essential Functions' for a Cancer Registrar I position.

2. Identify appropriate cases for inclusion in the cancer registry from multiple sources (i.e. Radiation Therapy charts, ISIS, HIM coders list, Casemix Casefinding Report).

3. Abstract information for each reportable/requested case including, but not limited to, demographics, primary site, histology, staging (collaborative, AJCC, etc.), treatment, recurrence, and cancer program goals. Codes data into the OncoLog database using American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACoS COC), CAP, AJCC, and SEER standards and rules.

4. Maintain timely and accurate data by processing the monthly Central Registry update within one week.

5. Perform ongoing follow-up on all cases in Oncolog according to established time frames by researching all available sources of information to obtain accurate status information (i.e. obituary review, SS death index, MPI, Casemix review).

6. Organize (where required), attend, and track Tumor Conference activities in their facility according to ACoS COC standards and entering the resultant information/plan into Oncolog.

7. Coordinate (where required) and participate in Cancer Committee meetings and activities as required by the ACoS CoC.

8. Maintain and advance skills through attendance and participation in required educational activities (i.e. Utah Cancer Registry workshops, Intermountain workshops, UCRA) and self-motivated learning. Document educational attendance and meet the minimum NCRA CE requirement to maintain certification.

9. Attend corporate meetings and participate in the development and coordination of the Intermountain oncology database.

10. Provide data, participate, and document studies using registry data.

11. Complete AJCC staging according to ACoS CoC standards.

12. Select cases and prepare materials for monthly physician quality control reviews.

13. Maintain compliance with all the standards for an approved ACoS CoC Cancer Program.

14. Participate in performance improvement activities related to Cancer Registry work processes and procedures.

15. Annually analyze registry data, produce, print, and disseminate the annual report in cooperation with the Cancer Committee.

16. Supervise the abstracting of non-certified Tumor Registrar(s).

17. Correct cases on the error check report to provide error-free data to the NCDB and meet or precede their established deadline at all accredited facilities.

18. Support the annual regional goals and the Cancer Services Board Goals.

19. Attend and track Tumor Conference activities in their facility according to ACoS CoC standards and enter the resultant clinical, treatment plan, and tracking data into Oncolog.

20. Support and participate in other cancer-related facility and community events as required.

Skills / Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:

1. High School graduate or GED.

2. Associate degree preferred.

3. Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) preferred or must obtain within first year of hire.

4. Minimum of two years abstracting experience required.

5. Academic expertise and proficiency in anatomy, physiology, biology, medical terminology, and ICD-O coding.

6. Ability to competently and independently perform the essential functions of a Cancer Registrar I.

7. Knowledge and expertise to facilitate an approved ACoS COC Cancer Program required.

8. Demonstration of excellent interpersonal relations and communications skills in previous work settings.

9. Proficient in the use of all Intermountain Healthcare software relating to cancer data extraction is required or must be demonstrated within six months of hire.

10. Ability to work independently but also as a cancer team member is required.

11. This position requires intensive training, 6 months to 1 year and would allow candidate to move into a career path within the department.
