The Emergency Department (ED) staff RN is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility and accountability for planning and delivery of patient care in the ED. The staff RN provides care to patients with a variety of illnesses and injuries ranging from minor to severe based on the nursing process, using technology, and therapeutic interventions. The RN coordinates care with other members of the ED team and other caregivers within the hospital.

Job responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

Perform a systems based pediatric assessment to determine physical, social, and psychological status using the nursing process to determine the child and family needs in order to develop a plan of care for the variety of patient complaints in the ED.

Develop, with patient and family involvement, an ED plan of care based on acuity and patient assessment, using PCMC and ED policies and standards of care to provide prompt, quality care.

Supervise non-licensed personnel and delegate appropriate tasks using knowledge of the nurse practice act, skill level and training of personnel to assign appropriate tasks resulting in safe and efficient patient care.

Administer medications in an appropriate manner to provide quality patient care using PCMC medication policies to achieve the appropriate patient response to the medication.

Monitor patient response to interventions using assessment skills and knowledge of age specific development to evaluate effectiveness of the treatment given.

Recognize signs and symptoms of emergent patient conditions using knowledge of age specific assessment and pediatric resuscitation skills to provide appropriate interventions resulting in prevention of further complications.

Demonstrate open and effective communication with ED multidisciplinary team using ED/RTU communication agreement to provide quality patient care.

Provide discharge teaching and appropriate resources to insure that the family knows how to care for their child at home, using approved teaching instructions and outside resources, resulting in parents feeling confident in continuing their child's care at home.

Document patient assessment, intervention, and response on the appropriate ED form, according to ED charting policies to maintain accurate record of care.

Position is full-time, variable shifts, with rotating weekends and holidays.

Skills / Requirements

Requires current Utah RN licensure. BLS required. Requires 1-2 years of RN experience. Also requires strong communication skills and the ability to multi-task in a stressful, fast paced environment.


Prefer candidates with previous Pediatric or Emergency RN experience. Also prefer candidates with PALS, ENPC and TNCC.
