The Intermountain Healthcare Phlebotomy Training Course is offered three (3) to four (4) times per year on an as needed basis, there is no set schedule or start dates.

Skills / Requirements

To learn the performance of venipuncture and capillary puncture and other basic skills used to collect laboratory specimens for analysis and to aid in the treatment and care of patients in a confidential, productive, and professional manner.


Intermountain Healthcare has created an employment opportunity for selected individuals to be trained as Phlebotomists. Intermountain Healthcare will cover the cost of tuition and training materials, and pay a salary of %247.64/hr while students are in training. Students will not be eligible for benefits during the training course.


What are the minimum requirements?: Applicants for the Intermountain Healthcare Phlebotomy Training Course must: have a high school diploma or equivalent GED, have a good work history, and must be able to speak, read, and write English. Candidates who have at least one (1) year of previous customer service experience are preferred. All candidates selected for the course must become CPR - Healthcare Provider certified before the course begins.


How long is the course?: The training course is seven-weeks. During the first three-weeks, students will be in the classroom. During the second three weeks, students will complete a clinical externship at various Intermountain Healthcare hospitals. During the final week students will job shadow in the lab. At the end of the first week of the course, students will be individually evaluated to see if their performance warrants the completion of the course.


What are the hours for the course?: Students will be full-time Intermountain Healthcare employees working 40-hours per week. Students must be available to work complete 8-hour shifts that will include mornings, afternoons, evenings, nights and weekends. Schedules will be set before the course begins and do not allow for flexibility or part-time participation. Students will not be permitted to miss any classes or externship hours.


Where is the class held?: Classes are held at the Intermountain Healthcare Employee Services Center, 5245 South College Drive, Murray. Students will also be required to attend sessions at Alta View Hospital, Intermountain Medical Center, LDS Hospital, and The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital at various times during the course and externship.


What happens when the course is over?: After completing the Intermountain Healthcare Phlebotomy Training Course, students are required to work for Intermountain Healthcare Laboratory Services in the Urban Central Region: comprised of Alta View Hospital, The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital, Intermountain Medical Center, and LDS Hospitals, and may include associated clinics and physicians offices, for 12 months as a Phlebotomist. If this requirement is not met, students will be required to reimburse Intermountain Healthcare %241000.00 to cover the cost of tuition and materials.


After externship hours are fulfilled, students may apply for open positions within Intermountain Healthcare. Intermountain Healthcare does not guarantee placement. It is each student's responsibility to apply and interview for open Phlebotomy positions. Upon completion of the course students will be paid the current entry rate for Phlebotomists (%2410.65/hr). Those students who have not secured a position upon completion of the course will be placed in the Phlebotomy Float Pool and will be budgeted for at least 12-hours per pay period.
