A Respiratory Therapist at Primary Children's Medical Center is a professional caregiver who is accountable for performing safe and effective pediatric respiratory care in the intensive care units, Emergency Department, Rapid Treatment Unit and non-ICU areas as ordered by physicians. The nature of the RT's job is to assess the status of patients, recommend interventions to the Nursing and Medical staffs, and to administer a wide range of therapeutic and diagnostic activities thus ensuring that quality, cost-effective therapy is provided.


Essential Job Responsibilities:

Scope of Practice - Ensure the delivery of respiratory services reflects the efficient and effective use of supplies and appropriate utilization of resources to meet the needs of the patient and the hospital. Demonstrate correct and safe technique in the use of equipment. Maintain a clean and safe environment for patients and staff.
Information Processing and Documentation - Read, understand and implement department policies and procedures in the clinical setting. Charge equipment and supplies used on a daily basis. Document all respiratory care given in accordance with related department policies.
Interpersonal Skills - Communicate information to unit charge person in a timely manner to facilitate team work. Provide a thorough, concise report at change of shift, at rounds and in written care plans or patient cards. Perform in a manner that supports staff and patient safety.
Current Knowledge - Actively participate in individual and group educational training activities. Shares knowledge gained from attending educational meetings and events.
Clinical Accountabilities - Exercise sound judgment in decision making. Consistently work in a problem-solving mode with patients. Demonstrate ability to set priorities in the clinical setting. Integrate legal and ethical standards into practice.
Teaching - Participate in multidisciplinary patient teaching rounds. Identify knowledge need and then document patient's instructions. Act as a resource for physicians and nursing on all critical care specialty equipment, procedures and protocols.









Skills / Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

Licensed by the State of Utah as a Respiratory Care Practitioner
Candidates must be Registered, or Registry-Eligible
Excellent communication skills
Ability to transfer and position patients independently and safely


Certification Requirements:

Basic Life Support (BLS)
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
Neonatal Respiratory Program (NRP)


Physical Demands of Position:

Physical ability to perform tasks in the assigned work areas
Considerable standing, intermittent walking, stooping, bending, reaching and turning
Lifting, pushing and pulling of respiratory equipment
Positioning and transferring of patients which may involve weight in excess of 50 pounds
