JOB TITLE: MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTIONIST I


GENERAL FUNCTION:


Responsible for accurate preservation of medical reports, letters, research, etc. Transcribes dictation using transcribing and dictating machines. Prepares periodic research reports. Types correspondence and reports, retrieves and copies reports, and answers telephone. Enters reports into computer. Attention to detail is critical.


REPORTING FUNCTION:


This position reports to the Supervisor of the relevant department.


REPRESENTATIVE ACTIVITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:


1. Prepares reports and submits them promptly to the pathologists.

2. Types material on a daily basis.

3. Files/pulls slides for doctors' review.

4. Performs other duties promptly and with accuracy, as assigned.

5. Data entry of cytologies.


Communications:


1. Asks questions and checks for understanding when instructions are given.

2. Evaluates daily workload to determine priority of procedures.

3. Exhibits computer level proficiency as pertaining to the position.

4. Handles phone calls and professional communications with efficiency, courtesy, poise and tact.

5. Interacts well with fellow staff members to help promote good working relationship.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Credentials High school diploma is required. Must be a graduate of a commercial school or the equivalent, to include courses in typing and business English. Experience A knowledge of medical terminology is required, with a high degree of proficiency. Should be able to type a minimum of 70 words per minute with accuracy. Physical and Other Requirement * Must be alert and able to perform routine office work, paying close attention to details for long periods of time under conditions of frequent interruptions.
* Must be physically and mentally capable of performing all essential tasks and duties involved in the position.
