General Function:

Ensures proper handling of all specimens received at ARUP's central facility and prepares specimens for laboratory testing. The position includes such functions as matching patient information, data entry, aliquoting, and scanning documents.

Reporting Function:

This position reports to the Specimen Processing Supervisor(s). In their absence this position reports to the appropriate Lead, Work Flow Coordinator or Night and Evening Operations Managers.

Representative Activities and Accountabilities:

1. Is assigned to a row upon successful completion of Specimen Processing training.

2. Immediately processes specimens as they become available.

a) Uses ESP whenever possible to enter patient demographics.

b) Orders all tests indicated on the requisition.

c) Properly comments any additional information on the requisition.

d) Looks for any problems and orders Except tests as necessary.

3. Labels specimens and requisitions appropriately

a) Properly handles ambient, refrigerated, and frozen specimens.

b) Is able to recognize all sample types.

c) Properly documents sample types, number received, temperature, and initial or stamp each requisition.

d) Checks the name on the label versus the name on the requisition versus the name on the specimen. Verify that all three names are the same.

e) Properly labels each requisition and accompanying samples.

f) Properly handles specimens requiring a Reroute.

g) Writes prompt information on appropriate specimen label.

h) Labels appropriate aliquot tube(s) for splitting.

4. Places processed specimens on the automated track or holds at appropriate temperature for Automated Specimen Management manual sorters.

5. Is able to process all interface clients and System 2000 clients and follow the appropriate procedures.

6. Correctly prepares specimens for delivery to UHSC by creating STL's and packaging according to specimen temperature.

7. Understands and operates the Document Management System (IMS).

8. Properly operates centrifuge.

9. Is skilled in all ESP functions: Accessioning, Pour off, Inquiry.

10. Is skilled in all ANSR applications related to accessioning.

11. Is familiar with current LIS software and functions.

12. Aliquots samples according to procedure using the proper safety equipment.

13. Knows all ARUP and UHSC laboratories, their location, hours of operation, and general function.

14. Remains informed of all procedure changes pertaining to sample processing.

15. Attends the Specimen Processing monthly meeting.

16. Reads and signs the Specimen Processing Procedure Manual and Safety Manual.

17. Adheres to all ARUP and Specimen Processing procedures and policies.

18. Checks with Supervisor or Lead before making judgment decisions.

19. Performs cleaning duties as assigned.

20. Adheres to all safety policies and regulations including, but not limited to, proper dress code, protective clothing and safety glasses.

21. Management has the discretion to change any duties as needed.

Job Qualifications


Education/Credentials required:
Education required: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Education/Credentials preferred:
Education preferred: College level courses in medical terminology, Biology or related life sciences

Experience required:
Type: 30 WPM and 10-key

Experience preferred:
Previous data entry experience. Previous laboratory experience.


Physical and other requirements:
* Regular and reliable attendance.

* Excellent customer service skills.

* Ability to communicate well in English

* Ability to work well with others.

* Ability to work all required overtime and take call.

* Ability to work well unsupervised.

* Ability to prioritize tasks.

* Demonstrates responsibility and dependability.
