General Function:

In relation to the responsibilities of a Project Manager I, a project is defined as a one-time endeavor with an established end date, and where the Project Manager serves as a resource assigned to manage the project and its assigned resources in order to meet the project requirements and produce the project deliverables.


The Project Manager I is responsible to facilitate the development of projects including project definition and scope, deliverable, risk assessment, milestones, project tracking, and status reporting. The Project Manager I provides project leadership, management, and oversight throughout the project but usually does not provide ongoing support of solutions post-deployment. Project Manager I may independently manage projects small to large in scope and complexity and generally manages projects at the department or division level.


Position may specialize in functional areas, such as Information Technology, which may require additional specific skill and experience.

Reporting Function:

This position works under the direction of the Division Manager, SVP, and/or the Project Management Office.

Representative Activities and Accountabilities:

The specific job duties of this position are:

1. Manage ARUP projects as defined by the Project Management Policy, including developing and monitoring project timetables, deliverables, project communications and progress reports, and other project requirements.

2. Follows project management methodologies as defined and outlined by Project Management Institute (PMI) and ARUP policies and procedures.

3. Create and execute project work plans and revise as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements.

4. Facilitate and troubleshoot problems associated with developing complex systems or with coordination, development, or design of projects.

5. Identify resources needed and assign individual responsibilities.

6. Manage day-to-day operational aspects of projects and their scope.

7. Minimize exposure and risk on project.

8. Manage project budget, including tracking and reporting expenses, capital costs, and resource costs.

9. Analyze project profitability, revenue, margins, and utilization.

10. Establishes and maintains communication as required with the project sponsor and operational committees and management.

11. Coordinate schedules of staff and other interested parties.

12. Review deliverables prepared by team before passing to client, project sponsor, or stakeholder.

13. Present analysis and recommendations to senior management, the Project Management Office, and the Project Review Committee. Maintains open and effective communication with and between personnel on work teams and with other members of the organization.

14. Ensure that proper processes are being followed, and assist in establishing new processes as required.

15. Carry out such other duties as may be assigned.

16. Report on project progress to the Project Review Committee as requested.

Skills / Requirements
Job Qualifications:

Education/Credentials required:


Education required: Bachelor's degree in Business Management, Project Management, or equivalent (minimum of two years project management experience managing small to large projects) alternatively. CAMP or PMP credential may be required. Strong knowledge of the technical and administrative aspects of all phases of project management.

Experience required:

*Minimum two years experience managing complex, multi-departmental project(s). *CAPM, PMP, or equivalent may be required *Experience in various software applications including the following:
* MS Project

* MS Office 2003, including Visio, Excel, and PowerPoint

* Computer aided simulation, process modeling software

* IT Managers may require additional IT hardware and software experience, depending on the nature of the IT projects managed.

Experience preferred: *MBA or MA in Project Management

Physical and other requirements:

* Demonstrated ability to manage and track complex issues and projects to completion

* Demonstrated experience with computerized systems, database management and spreadsheet and word processing programs to manipulate data and create reports

* Ability to organize work, meet deadlines, and work under stressful conditions.

* Must be able to work well with end users, vendors, consultants, and all levels of ARUP management.

* Ability to set priorities and be flexible as demands and priorities change.

* Ability to keep records and to maintain records in a neat and orderly fashion.

* Self starter with strong attention to detail.

* Regular and reliable attendance.

* Excellent customer service skills.

* Ability to work well as a team member and foster positive relationships with coworkers.

* Ability to communicate fluently in English, both orally and written.
