Post Date 7/21/2009 Title RL, Technical Specialist City Salt Lake City State UT GENERAL FUNCTION: Provides technical support in specialty areas within the Reagent Production laboratory. Generates data that requires a high degree of interpretation and training of which no detailed and explanatory procedures may exist. Expansive mastery of technical material and analytical ability required. Duties include a higher complexity of troubleshooting, teaching, training, production ability and client consultation than required of other personnel. Requires high caliber focused individual. REPORTING FUNCTION: This position reports to the Reagent Lab Lead and/or Supervisor and may receive direction and work assignments from others such as the Group Manager and/or Medical Director. REPRESENTATIVE ACTIVITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES: 1. Establishes and monitors the standards of accuracy, precision, and efficiency in the performance of tests and or the operation of equipment in a specialty area. 2. Ensures the examination and proper reporting for the specialty area. 3. Follows and performs qualified routine and specialized laboratory procedures. 4. Performs production, quality assurance and quality control functions. 5. Demonstrates competence in all Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for manufacturing processes relevant to their duties and responsibilities. 6. Manufacture products in the Reagent Lab reagent, kits, gels, micro-media and cell culture facility. 7. Assists with production workload across disciplines and areas of the Reagent Laboratory as requested. 8. Recognizes and reports both internal and external product issues and errors. 9. Accepts, resolves, or assists in the resolution of problems in the specialty areas. Makes the decision to obtain external assistance if necessary. Updates the Supervisor of all related issues. 10. Able to understand and perform any requested production or quality function upon request from the Technologist, Lead, Supervisor, Group Manager or Medical Director. 11. Assess the plausibility of laboratory results through correlation and statistical evaluation of data with common physiological conditions. 12. Designs, implements and evaluates new procedures and updates procedure manuals including MasterControl. 13. Maintains continual compliance with policies, procedures and record keeping necessary to meet the standards of regulatory agencies. 14. Maintains quality control and implements corrective action when indicated. 15. Monitors all performance check systems and preventative maintenance programs for all instruments and equipment in the specialty area. 16. Assists with evaluation and recommendation of new equipment in the specialty area. 17. Able to preform repairs on selected laboratory equipment and instrumentation. 18. Assists with maintaining appropriate level of supplies and reagents, and if necessary or requested, determines appropriate substitutes for ones normally used. 19. Assists the Teaching Technologist with training of all employees and students who may rotate or work in the specialty area as requested. 20. Develops training modules as requested. 21. Maintains the physical environment of the specialty area. 22. Assists with providing continuing education for the laboratory as requested. 23. Assists with maintaining current files of reference materials related to the specialty area and testing applications. 24. Has a thorough knowledge of both practical and theoretical scientific and laboratory practices. Able to apply logical and effective solutions for correction of any product, quality and/or documentation error. 25. Designs, implements and/or evaluates new testing procedures or product manufacturing functions as requested by the Technologist, Lead, Supervisor, Group Manager and/or Medical Director. 26. Implements changes as assigned in response to new technology, procedures or products. 27. Works with cross-functional Groups and Departments throughout ARUP. 28. Consults with specialty related questions. 29. Responds to special requests from ARUP Managers, Supervisors, Medical Directors, Reagent Lab, Technical Operations Sections and R & D as well as other ARUP personnel. 30. Provides technical information and/or instruction to technical sections upon request. 31. Follows and compiles with all safety and biohazard regulations as outlined in the Laboratory Safety Manual. 32. Able to fulfill the functions of a RL-Technologist II, Senior. 33. Demonstrates adaptability to change in the laboratory, department and group. 34. Able to effectively plan work load f Skills / Requirements
JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Education Bachelors Degree in relevant field. Experience Three years of Reagent Laboratory experience or five or more year's relevant experience. (Note: this is the same requirement as a RL-Technologist , Senior, Reagent Lab) Physical and Other Requirements Fine motor coordination, ability to pipet and follow procedures accurately. Clear speech and visual acuity. May be required to pass a color-blindness test. May be expected to perform occasional light lifting. Able to work requested overtime. Must be well organized and able to meet deadlines. Good communication skills both written and oral and able to work under stressful conditions and with tight deadlines. Successfully work independently as well as in a team environment. Demonstrate good judgment and planning, assessing results, and solving problems.
