Supervisor of Referral Testing


GENERAL FUNCTION:


Directs the daily work flow assigned to specific work section(s), including work assignments and result review. Monitors the competency and performance of employees within the scope of the work section. Ensures that procedures and methods are performed according to section protocol. Meets the objectives of ARUP Laboratories by maintaining high standards of quality, efficiency and economy.


REPORTING FUNCTION:


This position reports to the Group Manager, Technical who in turn reports to the Senior Vice President, Director of Laboratories.


REPRESENTATIVE ACTIVITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:


The essential function(s) of the Technical Supervisor, Non-Analytical include, but are not limited to the following:


1. Directs the daily work flow assigned to the specific technical work section. Provides coverage for absence of testing personnel due to illness, vacation, 7/7 off absences, or authorized LOA.


2. Reviews scheduling needs of the department. Provides a timely written schedule for all employees. Provides coverage as necessary to provide adequate staffing to meet service needs. Reviews time and attendance sheets and submits to payroll by the defined deadline. Provides summary of deviations, problems and overtime to Group Manager, as needed. Enforces the ARUP time and attendance policies.


3. Maintains adequate supply inventories to meet or exceed TAT; performs and/or coordinates quarterly inventory counts.


4. Interviews and recommends qualified individuals for positions within the section, following all guidelines and policies of ARUP.


5. Appraises and evaluates employees at six (6) months for new employees and on an annual basis thereafter. Every employee will have at least one performance evaluation per year. The Group Manager will review the evaluation prior to the Supervisor meeting with the employee for review. A copy of the evaluation will be submitted to the Group Manager and a copy sent to Human Resources for placement in the personnel file.


6. Provides and documents initial counseling at the bench level as necessary. Provides input to the Group Manager for subsequent counseling or disciplinary actions.


7. In conjunction with the Teaching Specialist/staff ensures new and existing staff are properly trained in all department procedures. Completes competency testing on all employees before they are allowed to work independently semi-annual for new employees and annually thereafter. Enforces ARUP policies.


8. Writes and updates SOP's. New procedures will be written and old procedures updated on an ongoing basis. SOP's will be written and in place prior to any procedural changes.


9. Communicates effectively with staff. This is to include holding regularly scheduled staff meetings at least bi-monthly. Minutes of these meetings are to be prepared and distributed to all staff within one week of the meeting, with a copy to the Group Manager.


10. Receives and handles complaints, include the forms defined in SOP's. Reviews pertinent information, performs or assigns additional investigation as necessary. Reports complaints and occurrences for tabulation and reporting on the monthly QA report. Follows up as needed to assure that problems are corrected.


11. Develops and maintains scientific and technical expertise in the given laboratory area. Contributes to lectures and staff in-service sessions. Provides at least two inservices per year. Contributes to written publications as required.


12. Updates personal skills and knowledge to remain current and become efficient and proficient in the position.


13. Consults with the Medical Director(s) regarding issues when appropriate.


14. Assists the Group Manager by providing input for Strategic Planning, annual budget, and Standards of performance. Recommends merit increases. Reports budget variations and workload fluctuations to the Group Manager. Meets all deadlines in providing requested information.


15. Follows change control procedure as outlined in department SOPs. Communicates changes to staff in an effective and timely manner. Ensures that competency documentation is completed with each change.


16. In conjunction with the Teaching Specialist/staff, ensures that continuing education and staff development activities are available to all employees on a regular basis.


17. Motivates employees to maintain a positive professional productive safe work environment.

Skills / Requirements

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Credentials

Required: Two to four years college experience or appropriate certification from one of the nationally recognized certification agencies. Minimum of six years of laboratory related experience.


Preferred: MT(ASCP) or equivalent. Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree. Categorical and/or Specialty certifications are preferred and may be required for certain positions. Master's Degree and /or certification as a specialist in a laboratory field is desirable. Experience in Phlebotomy, Specimen Receiving, or Exception Handling.


Physical and other requirements
Fine motor coordination, clear speech, good visual acuity including color perception, occasional light lifting, mobility either by walking or in a wheel chair, ability to work overtime and take call.

1. Involves judgment in planning work, assessing results, solving problems, and taking or recommending action. Errors or negligence may lead to serious consequences for patients or disrupt the operation of the group.

2. Ability to organize work, to meet deadlines and work under stressful conditions.

3. Exemplary communication skills both oral and written

4. Absolute integrity in the accurate identification of samples, performance and reporting of results.

5. Continual assessment of current literature.


Supervision

1. Works independently and under the direction and general supervision of the Group Manager.

2. Reports to Group Manager and/or others, for communication purposes, as necessary.
