Title Phlebotomist I

Weekends and holidays hours are 6:00 am - 4:30 pm.
General Function:

Knows and uses established phlebotomy systems, procedures, and techniques. Performs high quality routine and advanced venipuncture, and other specimen collection procedures, in a timely, accurate, and professional manner, according to department standards. Performs select laboratory bedside testing. Maintains open and accurate communications pertaining to laboratory services with physicians, nurses, patients, and other care givers. May assume lead responsibilities, as assigned, and may assist in the training of health care students and new employees.

Reporting Function:

This position reports to the Phlebotomy Supervisor and Group Manager of Phlebotomy and Support Services.

Representative Activities and Accountabilities:

The specific job duties of this position are:

1. Performs routine and advanced venipuncture and urine collections according to department standards, in a variety of locations, by:

a) collecting high quality specimens in a timely manner, using established phlebotomy techniques;

b) accurately labeling and properly handling specimens;

c) promptly delivering specimens to the clinical laboratory and/or testing section;

d) performing computerized clerical duties necessary to document accurate specimen collection, audit, update, and retrieve data.


2. Performs specimen processing duties as described in the Specimen Processor Technician I, UUHSC job description.


3. Understands, willingly accepts, and performs assignments from the Phlebotomy Lead, Phlebotomy Supervisor, Group Manager or designee; and is supportive of those in authority.


4. Develops and maintains knowledge of, and demonstrates support for ARUP Laboratories, University of Utah Hospital and Clinics, UUHSC Clinical Laboratory, and Phlebotomy department policies, procedures, and processes. Promptly notifies immediate superiors of exceptions and/or unusual occurrences and documents variances according to department policy.


5. Is considerate and courteous to patients, maintaining an atmosphere and environment that

respects the patient's dignity and emotions, and protects their privacy and confidentiality.


6. Provides necessary information and timely, appropriate communications to patients, hospital and clinic personnel, ARUP personnel, and various clients for efficient specimen collection and accurate testing.


7. Maintains an organized, clean, and well-stocked phlebotomy tray. Properly disposes of contaminated materials, keeps work areas supplied and clean, and observes all established safety policies.


8. Conducts himself/herself in a professional manner at all times as evidenced by:

a) good personal hygiene and compliance with Phlebotomy department and ARUP dress policy;

b) treating fellow employees courteously and with respect;

c) expressing opinions and suggestions to appropriate individuals in a constructive manner.


9. Demonstrates through diligence, personal ability, and communication, characteristics of technical accomplishment that will encourage fellow employees to perform to the best of their abilities.


10. Assumes Phlebotomy Lead responsibilities as assigned.


11. Assists in the training of health care students and new employees.


12. Is flexible and willing to adapt to changes in departmental structure. Participates in quality improvement activities.


13. Attends staff meetings and inservices to assure job competency and communication with ARUP.


14. The Phlebotomy and Support Services department functions as a team and all staff are expected to support each other.


15. Successfully completes identified cross training duties and maintain competency.


16. Management retains the discretion to add or change the duties of the position at any time.

Skills / Requirements
Job Qualifications

Education/Credentials required:


Education required: Must be 18 years of age

High School Diploma or equivalent


Shift specific requirements:


Outpatient Laboratory: Six months phlebotomy experience

Phlebotomy (1130-2200, 1430-0100): Six months phlebotomy experience

Education/Credentials preferred:

Credentials preferred: Certified Phlebotomy Technician

Experience/skills preferred:

Six months phlebotomy experience



Physical and other requirements:

* Regular and reliable attendance.

* Fine motor coordination.

* Visual acuity.

* Ability to communicate fluently in English

* Ability to work well unsupervised

* Ability to prioritize tasks.

* Ability to perform a physically demanding job (i.e., constant movement between floors, transportation of phlebotomy trays, bending)

* Ability to lift ten pounds.

* Demonstrates responsibility and dependability.

* Must maintain a professional image and pleasant demeanor.
