General Function:

Under direct supervision, prepares specimens for processing in the laboratory; performs selected waived, moderately, and highly complex analytical processes; transcribes and inputs previously validated results; performs and documents quality control and selected equipment maintenance; answers the telephone; performs quality assurance activities; recognizes problems and assists in identification of the cause.


Reporting Function:

This position reports to the Technical Supervisor who in turn reports to the Group Manager.


Essential Functions:

The specific job duties of this position are:
Testing
1. Performs waived and automated analytic processes. This includes qualitative, semi-qualitative or quantitative tests performed automatically by an instrument.

* Aliquots specimens and reagents using previously calibrated and approved automatic syringes, pipettes or other dispensers.

* Transcribes instrument recorded results to the laboratory computer system

* Releases results if auto-verification is in use

* Performs qualitative and semi-quantitative 'spot, tablet, or stick' tests, but ensures only a CLS/LLS records the results.


2. Oversees calibration on self calibrating instruments

* Calibrates using samples poured or aliquoted to sample cups or tubes and placed directly on the instrument

* Oversees the instrument calibration results and transcribes successful e results

* Ensures all unsuccessful calibrations are transferred to a Technologist for resolution.


For the following activities and accountabilities, this position is under the direction and supervision of a Medical Technologist, Technologist II or Technologist I


3. Performs selected moderate and high complexity analytic processes (both automated and non-automated) under direct supervision of a Technologist competent in supervised procedures.

* Ensures all non-automated work is validated by Technologist prior to release.

* Recognizes unexpected or implausible results, errors, and problems with patient tests. Consults with Technologists or Technical Supervisor for problem resolution.

* Operates selected laboratory instruments and ensures proper functioning of laboratory equipment. Performs minor troubleshooting and routine maintenance under direction of a Technologist. and/or Technical Supervisor. Maintains records and documentation.


4. Performs select calibration processes under direct supervision of a Technologist competent in the procedure

* Performs manual processes with dilutions and mathematical calculations

* Ensures all results are validated by a Technologist prior to release


5. Performs and documents quality control and equipment maintenance within predetermined parameters.

Other Duties and Accountabilities:
6. Accurately logs in and processes specimens according to established departmental procedures.

7. Understands appropriate specimen collection, handling and transport procedures. Prepares specimens for analysis and determines acceptability of samples within guidelines. Resolves sample handling problems or refers problems to designated Technologists, and/or Technical Supervisor.

8. Processes data and transcribes data in the laboratory computer system. All results are validated by the supervising Medical Technologist/Technologist II.

9. Meets lab section turnaround times.

10. Trains on new procedures to a prescribed level of competency.

11. Meets output measures as defined by individual group procedures. Assists others in areas of defined competency when assigned workload is complete.

12. Answers telephone calls in a timely and courteous manner.

13. Refers requests for special and unusual tests to the Technical Supervisor and/or Group Manager.

14. Assists in data collection for QA indicators as defined.

15. Assists in the performance of validation of equipment and test methods as defined.

16. Assists in the creation and review of standard operating procedures (SOP) as defined.

17. Performs internal and external proficiency testing as defined.

18. Maintains clean and orderly work area. Cleans bench surfaces and equipment each shift or after contamination or spills. Documents as required.

19. Stocks and maintains reagents and supplies. Notes receipt date and lot number on reagents to ensure that oldest stock is used first. Discards outdated reagents according to section policy and notifies supervisor.

20. Assists in the training of Technicians as assigned.

Skills / Requirements

EDUCATION REQUIRED: BS, MS or BA in one of the biological sciences (chemistry, biology, microbiology, molecular biology, etc.) to include specific college course requirements. May be hired within one or two courses of completing the requirements for the Technologist I.

College course requirements vary by discipline of lab, requiring an evaluation of transcripts to determine eligibility. EXPERIENCE PREFERRED: Previous work experience. Undergraduate courses in molecular biology and genetics highly desirable.

Technologist Trainee or Technologist position(s), one of the following educational qualifications must be met to ensure high quality laboratory testing:

* Bachelor's degree with 25 semester hours of Chemistry, plus 16 semester hours of Biology, to include specific course work

* Bachelor's degree with 25 semester hours of Biology/Microbiology, plus 16 semester hours of Chemistry, to include specific course work

PHYSICAL AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

* Regular and reliable attendance.

* Excellent customer service skills.

* Ability to work well with others.

* Ability to work all required overtime.

* Fine motor coordination.

* Clear speech.

* Good visual acuity including color perception.

* Occasional light lifting.

* Mobility.

* Ability to organize work, to meet deadlines and to work under stressful conditions.

* Good communications skills, both oral and written.

* Absolute integrity in the accurate identification of samples, test performance and reporting of results.
